A new report from Eurogamer alleges that the highly-anticipated successor to the Nintendo Switch console was revealed at Gamescom 2023 in a behind-closed-doors event.
The report, which was authored by Tom Phillips, states that a number of partner developers were shown the console, but Eurogamer was not able to get hands-on with it.
The report says that a demonstration of a “souped up” version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was shown, which was “designed to hit the Switch 2’s beefier target specs.” This was described as a “tech demo” solely for the purpose of showing off console performance. No further details about this alleged tech demo have been revealed.
This approach is reminiscent of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s strategy leading up to the release of the PlayStation 5, where they used the familiar game Marvel’s Spider-Man to demonstrate reduced loading times.
Nintendo has yet to officially confirm the existence of this rumored console or its potential features, such as improved performance, 4K resolutions, and backward compatibility. However, industry reports suggest that a larger, public reveal may be scheduled for 2024.
Despite the Nintendo Switch nearing the typical lifespan of a gaming console (around seven years), Nintendo continues to enjoy significant success with it. While there may not be an immediate need for a new console, Nintendo maintains a dedicated fan base, and demand for the Nintendo Switch remains high.
