Microsoft has been actively broadening its horizons in recent times. One of its major steps was an attempt to acquire Activision, but the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) didn’t give the green light. Interestingly, Microsoft revealed in related documents that it aims to develop a new Xbox gaming console by 2028.

This console will revolve around the ideas of cross-platform play and cloud gaming, aiming to unite Mobile, PC, and Xbox gaming experiences.

Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox plans to harness the power of cloud gaming. In connection with Microsoft’s attempted acquisition of Activision Blizzard, a document was released. On page 111 of this 200-page document, Microsoft stated its intention to create a next-gen Xbox that leans heavily on cloud gaming technologies by 2028. This tech aims to fuse together the worlds of smartphones, PCs, and consoles.

Microsoft’s Universal App Storement project involves the development of these new cloud gaming technologies. But, this was part of the reason the CMA did not approve the Activision deal. The CMA voiced concerns about cloud gaming technology and the potential for Microsoft to monopolize a significant chunk of the market if this technology was implemented.

Microsoft is currently embroiled in a legal battle to overturn the CMA’s decision, the outcome of which could influence the development of its next-gen console technology. As of now, Microsoft hasn’t made any official announcements regarding when these consoles will be available or when they’ll be launched.
